MASSACHUSSETTS – Oracle topped IDC Health Insights' 2010 Top 10 Life Science Software Vendor list for the second consecutive year.

According to the report, Oracle has extended its life science software license revenue lead over all other vendors to $161 million. Other vendors in the top 10 include SAP, which continued its stronghold on the no. 2 spot, with a 5.6 percent market share and $170 million in life science software license revenue; and Accelrys, which moved into third place, holding a five percent market share and $150 million in life science software license revenue.

SAS and Medidata round out the top five vendors, with $131 million and $116.2 million in revenue, respectively, concluding the only five vendors that currently exceed the $100 million threshold.

Cegedim and PTC held firm in maintaining their inclusion in the top 10 list and were joined by three new vendors, including research-focused companies Thermo Fisher Scientific and Perceptive Informatics as well as contract and revenue management vendor iMANY.

While life science organizations have significantly reduced business costs in recent years, IDC Health Insights said companies continue to actively pursue additional opportunities to improve productivity and reduce costs across the enterprise.

IDC Health Insights' annual vendor assessment -- the Top 10 Life Science Software Vendors report -- identifies the top 10 software vendors serving the life science market.

"From an IT perspective, companies are undergoing significant application portfolio rationalization, software consolidation, and IT centralization to reduce redundancy across divisions and consolidate decision making. Software vendors that architect solutions to complement these needs will be most successful over the long term," said Eric Newmark, research manager, Business Systems Strategy at IDC Health Insights.
