A new agreement between the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) will pave the way for the establishment of the UITP Center for Transport Excellence for the Asia-Pacific region in Singapore.
The center is envisioned to be a one-stop land transport knowledge and research hub, with specific focus on public transport and sustainable mobility, and to provide training and support as well to land transport administrations and practitioners.
Singapore's excellent public transport and continued innovation were cited as the reasons for the country's selection as host of the new center.
"Ever evolving societies, changing commuters' behaviors and escalating expectations make managing transportation in a city a 'work in progress' always. LTA and UITP joined forces today to facilitate a worldwide smooth exchange of knowledge and experiences with the establishment of one of the first centers for transport excellence and through SITC, making Singapore a one-stop shop for transport for the region's public transport practitioners," said Hans Rat, UITP's Secretary General, said during the signing of the memorandum of understanding.
One of the centers first initiatives will be the inaugural LTA-UITP Singapore International Transport Congress (SITC) in October 2013, which will gather international speakers to share insights on urban transport issues, and solutions that improve the quality and effectiveness of land transport systems.
