Thailand kicked off its free WiFi project with the installation of 20,000 free public WiFi hotspots in Bangkok just before the New Year.
The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) said in a release that it targets an additional 20,000 WiFi hotspots by October this year and plans to install a total of 250,000 WiFi hotspots nationwide by 2015.
Launched in cooperation with TOT Public Company, CAT Telecom, and Thailand’s mobile network providers, the project is part of the Smart Thailand scheme, which aims to expand high-speed broadband Internet connectivity across the country and cover at least 80 percent of districts nationwide.
To use the service, MITC said registration on MICT’s website is required. Users are also allowed to access the Internet for two hours at a time at an average speed of 2 Mbps.
MICT Minister Anudith Nakornthap said the project was also New Year’s present for all people from the Thai government.
